Brazil increases participation in the Asian market
In the period from January to April 2020, the country grew in total volume of exports.
Brazil continues to keep exports high and increasing its participation in the Asian market, even with the crisis of the new coronavirus, according to the National Society of Agriculture (SNA). According to Marcos Troyjo, Special Secretary for Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Economy, considering the largest economies in the world within the scope of the G-20, the country emerges as an exception in the context of the crisis.
“In the period from January to April 2020, the country grew in total export volume and increased its participation in the Asian market. In the first four months of the year, about 45% of Brazilian exports went to Asia, ”said the secretary.
As a result, Brazil is moving in a direction contrary to the situation described by the World Trade Organization (WTO), which estimates a drop of up to 32% in international trade in 2020. “Sales to South Korea and Japan, for example, have grown quite recently. Brazil today exports much more to countries in Asia than to the United States and Mexico, “informed the secretary, adding that” this is all part of an effort to enhance Brazil’s comparative advantages in agribusiness and in the mineral commodities sector, very important for the recovery of the Brazilian economy ”, he adds.
In this scenario, Troyjo also highlighted the balance of trade with China, the main destination for Brazilian exports. “In the past 20 years, Brazil-China trade relations have gone through a period of strong expansion. In 2001, bilateral trade was US $ 1 billion a year and today it is around US $ 100 billion annually ”, he concludes.
