Conab projects grain crop of 251.4 million tons with high corn and soybean crops
Brazilian grain production is expected to be 251.4 million tons in the 2019/2020 harvest. The record performance in agriculture is mainly due to the soybean and corn harvests, responsible for around 88% of production. The data appear in the 10th Grain Survey carried out by the National Supply Company (Conab) and released on Wednesday, June 8.
In this harvest, Conab estimates the largest harvest ever recorded for oilseeds, with a production of 120.9 million tons. The good result was obtained, despite the climatic problems registered mainly in Rio Grande do Sul, with a national average productivity record higher than that of the last harvest. The reflection of good production can be seen in exports of the product. In the first half of this year, the country exported 60.3 million tons of grain, an increase of 38% compared to the same period last year.
The increase in the dollar exchange rate against the real contributed to this number, increasing the competitiveness of the Brazilian product in the international market. Soy and other agribusiness products contributed to a balance of approximately US $ 36 billion in the trade balance, something around R $ 190 billion.
Corn production is also expected to be the highest on record. With the harvest carried out in 25% of the 2nd cereal harvest, the expectation that Brazil will have a production exceeding 100 million tons. Result achieved even with the delay in planting soybeans, which impacts the planting of corn, causing part of the sowing to be done outside the ideal window. In Mato Grosso, the main producing state, climatic conditions were less favorable than in the previous harvest, which did not allow crops to express their full productive potential.
However, the growth in the planted area must compensate for the negative influences on the crop. This increase may be a consequence of market prices, at remuneration levels for the producer, who encouraged planting. In this expansion of the product, Brazil will register a third harvest of the cereal, pulled by the producing region of Sergipe, Alagoas and the northeast of Bahia (Sealba). With sowing completed, performance depends on climatic conditions in the coming months.
Another product that already records the planting of the 3rd harvest completed is beans. However, for legumes, the climate has a greater influence in the North and Northeast areas of the country, since the production registered in the Midwest is irrigated. With the cultivation of the three crops of the product, consumption and production remain aligned, close to 3 million tons.
Winter crops
With the planting of the main crops finalized, the Company continues to monitor the development of crops and the impact of the climate. Highlight for wheat, which shows significant growth in the planted area, reaching 2.32 million hectares, an increase of 13.7%, reaching a production of 6.3 million tons.
