Despite a tumultuous global environment, which includes the impacts of the new coronavirus pandemic on the growth of the world economy, the drop in oil prices – the raw material for the manufacture of synthetic fiber – and the uncertainties surrounding the consequences of the trade war between China and United States, the projections for the Brazilian cotton sector are quite positive, points out Outlook Fiesp 2029.

According to a survey carried out by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo – Fiesp, Brazil became the second largest exporter of feather in 2019, with China as its main destination. In addition to the Asian giant, Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Turkey have also been gaining prominence in the Brazilian export basket, which shows that the recognition of the quality of the national fiber has allowed the country to gain ever greater spaces in global trade, a trend that should be maintained in the coming years.

Outlook Fiesp 2029 estimates indicate that 3.3 million net tons will be exported in 2028/2029, which represents a 100% growth compared to the 2018/2019 crop.

With domestic consumption also on the rise – projections are for a 20% increase in domestic consumption in the same period – the planted area, production and productivity are also expected to remain high in 2028/2029. The projections are for growth of 31%, 54% and 17%, respectively, with the Midwest region remaining as the main cotton producing center in the country.
