Agribusiness opened 217 thousand vacancies in the third quarter of 2020.

The employed population grew 1.3% in relation to the previous three months, totaling 16.94 million people.

The employed population in agribusiness in the third quarter of 2020 grew by 1.3% compared to the previous quarter (equivalent to an increase of approximately 217 thousand workers), totaling 16.94 million people, according to studies by the Center for Studies Advanced in Applied Economics (Cepea / Esalq / USP).

On the same basis of comparison, the number of employed persons in Brazil was in the opposite direction, with a decrease of 1.06%, or about 883 thousand people.

According to Cepea researchers, this behavior is indicative of recovery in the agribusiness labor market after the period considered, until then, the most critical in terms of the effects of the covid-19 pandemic on the sector (especially from April to June). The participation of agribusiness in the Brazilian labor market reached 20.55% in the third quarter of 2020.

Despite this, when comparing the third quarter of 2020 with the same period in 2019, there was a significant drop in the number of employed persons in agribusiness, of 7.58%, equivalent to 1.39 million people, with this decrease being the most expressive in the comparison between third quarters since the beginning of the historical series of Cepea, in 2012. In the case of the total Brazilian employed population, also between the third quarter of 2020 and the same period of 2019, the decrease was even more intense, of 12.09 % the equivalent of 11.34 million people.

Researchers at Cepea explain that, among the profiles of workers, the most significant reductions from July to September in 2020 compared to the same period in 2019, in number of employed persons, were observed for employees, with and without a formal contract, for workers with lower levels of employment. schooling and for women.

In sectors, in general, the most accentuated losses in the number of occupations occurred in agroindustry and agribusiness. “Because they are atypical behaviors or of a higher magnitude than usual, it is likely that these losses are partly related to the covid-19 crisis”, says Cepea.

Regarding monthly effective earnings, between the third quarters of 2019 and 2020, there was a real increase in the average for employees (4.8%) and for employers (5.7%); but fall for self-employed workers (4.2%). In part, “the increases can also be explained by the exit of the labor market, in the face of the pandemic, of more vulnerable workers and who received lower wages”, concludes Cepea.
