China’s voracious appetite explodes agribusiness exports and sector generates US $ 7.1 billion surplus in August.
With a 16.5% increase in the quantity of products shipped, a strong growth in sales of soybeans in grains and sugar, agribusiness exported US $ 8.91 billion in September, up 7.8% compared to the same month last year. Imports totaled US $ 912 million, a decrease of 17.3% in relation to the same month of 2019, and with that the trade balance of the sector generated a surplus of US $ 7.1 billion, and was responsible for more than 50% of exports country totals.
Soybeans and China, Brazil’s main trading partner, continue to consolidate themselves as the main highlights of Brazilian foreign trade in terms of exports and the destination country. According to data from the Agribusiness Trade Balance, released by the Department of Trade and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), the increase in external sales of soybeans in grains and cane sugar were responsible for the result of the month. Agribusiness accounted for more than 50% of the country’s total exports.
Exports of soybeans reached US $ 2.21 billion (+ 25.1%). Of that total, China bought close to 75%, which represented US $ 1.65 billion. Shipments of Brazilian agribusiness products to China also explain the increase in the month analyzed. 30% more than that registered in 2019 (US $ 639 million) were shipped to the Asian country, totaling US $ 2.7 billion in August.
According to the Map, with the drop in sugar production in India and Thailand in the 2019/2020 harvest, there were new opportunities for Brazil to increase exports of the product, which reached US $ 960 million in August, with an increase of 107%.
Imports of agricultural products decreased from US $ 1.10 billion (August / 2019) to US $ 912 million (August / 2020), which meant a decrease of 17.3%. Thus, the August trade balance totaled US $ 7.1 billion.
