Government systems integration will improve inspection of agricultural products

Since the Unique Foreign Trade Portal – Portal Siscomex Program was created in 2014, the Federal Government has been looking for ways to reduce bureaucracy, time and costs in Brazilian exports and imports.

The efforts are to reformulate the control processes – making them more efficient and harmonized – and to create a single window to centralize the interaction between the government and the private operators operating in foreign trade.

New changes

As of October 1, new rules come into force and should speed up the inspection of imports of agricultural products. The integration of several platforms into the Single Portal will facilitate management and reduce the time to release operations considered to be low risk.

“All companies that import products of agricultural interest will save time and money. The work will be reduced, there will be fewer errors in filling out forms and this will guarantee more efficiency and speed in the release of cargo ”, explains Arthur Achiles de Souza Correa, a lawyer specialized in Customs, Business and International Law who has been working in the sector for 18 years.

Focus on high risk cargo

The changes should also help the work of the tax auditors, who will now act on a single database.

Operations considered to be of intermediate risk may be exempted from physical inspections, since the inspection will be made based on the documentation. In this way, the auditors will be able to concentrate inspection on cargoes that represent a high risk to consumers and Brazilian agriculture.

“All these new features will guarantee greater security and agility in customs controls, because the vast majority of cargo entering the country occurs under the classification of low risk”, concludes Correa.
